ETKO project: Traceability is important

The purpose of ETKO* project (ended April 2010) was to study the integrated modeling of electronics production chains. The traceability of product-specific data was recognized as one of the most important issues. The three focal points of the project were: 1) process models (analyzing systems), 2) modeling methods, and 3) data acquisition systems (RFID, Radio Frequency Identification).

Salient results achieved in the Etko project:

  • Mapping of amount, quality and content of data in different production processes. Defining research problems. Planning and implementation of data acquisition.
  • Implementation of electronics data preprocessing and acquisition programs. This turned out to be laborious but important part of the project, because for example electronics testing equipment produce large amounts of data, which is difficult to utilize without preprocessing and data compression.
  • Data analyzing and modelling using both linear and nonlinear, data based methods. New methods for data based modelling and optimizing of electronics production processes were developed.
  • A demo system for integrated analysing and modelling of electronics production chains was developed.
  • A demo system for analysing and modelling of electronics production tester data was developed.
  • Data traceability was studied through a pre-survey of suitability of RFID technique onto electronics production. Based on the survey, it is possible to use RFID tags in the monitoring of printed circuit boards, different manufacturing materials and tools used in electronics production through whole product lifecycle. The advantages of RFID tags were ascertained to be, among other things, the benefits in readability and rewriting of identifiers.
This two-year project was implemented in co-operation with the Process Informatics Research Group from the University of Eastern Finland. The project was funded by EU, Tekes, Enics Finland Oy, Kemppi Oy and Wisetime Oy.
